From reading the chapter my take on authenticity is that it is a way of making something genuine and valuable in popular culture. I chose the Tiffany's diamond engagement ring as a symbol of authenticity for various reasons. When people are getting an engagement ring for their significant other they want something that is authentic. For diamond rings, Tiffany's is one of the most stereotyped high class label in today's popular culture. Just for having that little blue box with the name Tiffany's engraved into it people automatically are convinced that what they are about to receive is authentic and original.
I completely agree with your post on the value of "authentic" items, and the way people view them as more valuable than other items that may be more commercialized. A diamond is a diamond, and today with man-made diamonds, people are always looking for the more "authentic" products even though they are more expensive. I don't think an item's authenticity should be viewed as the most important aspect of it, and your example of the tiffany diamonds is perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely have a good point about how people will immeadiately think that a Tiffany's diamond is authentic all the time because of the blue box. If anyone bought another type of ring they might be thought to be cheap but that ring is just as likely to be an authentic ring.
ReplyDeleteThe picture is a great example of Authenticity. Espically the Tiffany & Co. logo that is presented above the diamond showing how authentic it really is. And since the company is well known, everyone knows that the name lets you know it is expensive and very genuine.
